A Day At The Beach
There’s no better way to spend an August day than at the beach. And Sunday Beach and Front Beach (gulf beach) on Matagorda Island are fun options for the entire family. It’s a great place to go beachcombing, or you can watch for dolphins, swim, build sand castles or just relax with a book.
Accessible only by private boat or charter, the 7,325 acre Matagorda Island State Park and National Wildlife Refuge is an important wildlife sanctuary and a retreat for individuals. Visitors should be completely self-sufficient: bring plenty of drinking water, food, adequate sun protection, and insect repellent. The island lacks conveniences such as electricity, water and telephone service. Hiking and bicycling are allowed on the island’s 38-mile-long beach as well as 32 miles of paved roads. An on-island beach shuttle service is available. For more information, visit www.tpwd.state.tx.us.
