Shelling for The Elusive Mitchell’s-Wentletrap
One wonderful way to enjoy the coast is to go shelling along the beach. The Texas coast is rich in a wide variety of unique shells…over 400 different species…including the rare Mitchell’s Wentletrap. Named for Joseph Daniel Mitchell, naturalist and conchologist, this elusive shell is pale ivory with dark brownish bands and measures 1.5 to 2.5 inches. This rare shell is only found on the Texas Coast, specifically Gulf beach, and Mexico.
